What Makes an Off-Grid Caravan?

A solid off-grid caravan elevates your camping experience, no matter what type of terrain you plan to tackle. Whether you’re traveling through the outback, national parks, or beach tracks, choosing the best off-grid caravan is essential. Here are the key factors to consider:

Independent Suspension

Independent Suspension

The key feature of any great off-grid caravan is its suspension. It should ensure a smooth ride and protect the caravan from damage. Independent suspension is the best option for rough, uneven terrain.

Robust Coupling

Robust Coupling

An off-grid caravan’s coupling must allow the head to move freely on both vertical and horizontal axes. This flexibility reduces pressure on the chassis, especially when driving over bumpy, uneven terrain.

Chassis And Drawbar

Chassis and Drawbar

The chassis is the foundation of any off-grid caravan. To handle Australia’s harsh outback, it must be made of strong, high-quality steel. Retreat’s supergal chassis, combined with a stone shield mounted under the drawbar, offers added protection from rocks and debris, ensuring the longevity of your caravan.

Caravan Body Construction

Caravan Body Construction

Retreat’s off-grid caravans feature a fully interlocked aluminium frame with welded roof and wall panels. These are held together with anti-vibration pins for strength and style. Inside, Retreat’s RXP construction provides enhanced thermal insulation, keeping the cabin comfortable no matter the season. The RXP composite material is also water-resistant and backed by a lifetime Rot-Free Structural Guarantee.

Offroad High Round

Higher Ground Clearance

A higher ground clearance ensures there’s enough space between the caravan’s chassis and obstacles on the road. We recommend a minimum clearance of 500mm and a departure angle of 40 degrees or more for true off-grid caravanning.

Offroad Terrain

All-Terrain Tyres

All-terrain tyres are designed for off-grid travel. They feature a stronger carcass construction, higher load ratings, and deeper tread patterns, offering better performance on dirt roads and rough surfaces.

Retreat offers three off-grid caravan models, each with features designed for comfort and adventure.
